Picks from Peter King's Ass

Week 8

Sunset's Sure Shot Picks: Week 8

We are going to keep it short and sweet this week. It has been a rough start for us this year, but we are looking to turn it around this week. The bookies are looking for their money, so we better win some back this week.

Game 1: Philly -1 over Minnesota

Minnesota has a very solid run game with the emergence of rookie Adrian Peterson. Philly's D is going to have a tough job stopping Peterson, but lucky for them, that is all they have to worry about. The Vikings' QB and WR situation is downright pathetic. Expect Philly to load up the box and force a gimpy Tavaris Jackson to beat them through the air, which means, expect Philly to win.

Final Score: Philly 24 Minnesota 10

Game 2: Cleveland -3 over St. Louis

Cleveland's offense has looked impressive so far this year. Since Anderson has taken over the QB duties, Cleveland has shown that they are able to put up points against everyone they have played. St. Louis on the other hand can't score against anyone.

Final Score: Cleveland 28 St. Louis 3

Game 3: San Francisco +3 over New Orleans

Neither of these teams are very good, but I am giving the edge to SF because of their defense. SF should be able to put pressure on Drew Brees throughout this game. SF also gets Alex Smith back this week which should give their offense a spark.

Final Score: SF 21 NO 10

Monday Night Game: Green Bay +3 over Denver

Denver hasn't been able to stop anyone. They are also banged up on defense this week. Favre seems to have jumped into a time warp this year and is playing at a very high level again. GB should be able to move the ball and score points in this one.

Final Score: GB 35 Denver 28

Frankie Medowview here this week with some interesting games and thoughts.

Game 1: Pittsburgh -3.5 at Cincinnati

Pittsburgh is reeling after the tough loss at Denver on Saturday night, while it looks like the Bengals might have righted the ship with the great performance by Kenny Watson last week; however, I’ll take Pittsburgh over Northern Kentucky this week.

Pittsburgh 24 Northern Kentucky 14

Game 2: Giants -9 at Miami (London, England)

With the first NFL Regular Season game across the pond this weekend, look for Big Blue to continue their roll to the top of the NFC with a win against the hapless Fins. I’d watch for Eli and Company to put up big points, not Bradyesqe points, but enough for the cover.

Giants 31 Miami 17

Game 3: Indianapolis -6.5 at Carolina

The Colts should have no problems covering by a touchdown in this game, in fact, odds are that the Colts will score more TDs (4) than times Vinny gets up in the middle of the night to take a piss.

Indianapolis 34 Carolina 10

The Epic Path to The Meineke Bowl

week of October 28, 2007

by: Dave Johnson

Texas A&M +2.5 vs. Kansas, 6:00pm

I like what Kansas has done so far this year. They're grinding games out the old fashioned way, playing with tough defense and a solid running game. The Bachelor agrees, giving them a 50/50 shot to run the table prior to their victory over Colorado last week. However, let's not forget that this is the same former backup who once called Purdue and Penn State the two best teams in the Big 10. I'll take those odds straight to the bank. The Aggies are no slouch, sitting at 6-2 after jumping on the Nebraska-thrashing train that is currently speeding through the Big 12. Dennis Franchione knows how to coach games like this, and expect A&M's stout ground game to wear down Kansas. This will be a slugfest, and the only guarantee is that it won't be pretty. The 12th man is all they need as A&M pulls out a close one.

Texas A&M 16, Kansas 13

Utah -6 @ Colorado State

It may not sound like a lot of fun -but I'm lacking creativity, and I'm putting money on this game. The Utes have done it for me before on the blog. And I like Brian Johnson. Something about CSU's 1-6 record does't impress me. I'll be playing the Utes, I suggest you do the same.

Utah 36, Colorado State 14

6 Point Teaser Special

Wisconsin -1.5 vs. Indiana
Wake Forest + .5 vs. North Carolina
South Florida +2.5 @ UConn

Wake and the Badgers always play it close, but pull out the Vs. UConn still doesn't have that sod, and you know what that means.

Picks From Peter King's Ass

Week 7

By: Tom Sunset and Frankie Meadowview

Tom Sunset’s Picks

Ugggghhhh. Turnovers and injuries beat us last week, but it won't happen again this week. Sunset has decided to try a new approach and never bet on a team being lead by a back-up QB, especially when that QB is Kurt Warner, who is a fumbled snap away from injury on every play. Anyway, let’s get to this week's picks:

Game 1: Washington -8.5 over Arizona

I usually stay away from NFL games when the spread gets this big, but this should be an easy win and cover for the 'Skins. Arizona is down to their 3rd string QB (the recently signed Tim Rattay) who showed last week once again why every team has passed on him for the past two years. Look for the 'Skins to blitz heavy and force Rattay into picks or sacks.

Final Score: Washington 28 Arizona 10

Game 2: Tampa Bay +2 at Detroit

Detroit started out the year looking like the real deal, then the clock hit midnight and they turned back into the Lions. D-town is coming off a bye week, but I just don't feel they match up well against Tampa Bay. Detroit struggles against mobile QBs and Garcia has been playing very solid ball this year. Martz will continue to have Kitna throw the ball deep which should cause a pick or two. This one will probably go back and forth, but look for TB to come out on top.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 31 Detroit 28

Game 3: Pittsburgh -3.5 at Denver

Denver can't stop the run and Pittsburgh loves to pound it down your throat. Denver does have the top rated pass D in the league, but that is mainly because teams have not had to throw on them. Look for Fast Willy Parker to eat up yards and clock. Hines Ward should also be back for this game, which will give Big Ben his best receiving option back.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 24 Denver 14

Frankie Meadowview’s Picks

This week I’m going with the NFC East special, the best division hands down in the NFC, I’d have to give the AFC South the best division in the NFL at this point in time. Let’s go win some money.

Game 1: Dallas -10 vs. Minnesota

Dallas will be looking for blood this week, after the beat down they took by the Patriots last week. Adrian Peterson will be back in his home state for his first pro game in Texas, look for him to put up some yards, but not enough to keep up with the passing attack by Tony “We Were Just Friends” Romo.

Minnesota 20 Dallas 35

Game 2: New York Giants -9.5 vs. San Francisco

The Big Blue Machine is going to keep rolling this week when the 49ers come into the Meadowlands, yeah the 49ers have Nate Clements but he can’t cover Plaxico, Amani, and Shockey all at the same time. I predict a nice day from Eli and a lot of points.

San Francisco 14 New York Giants 28

Game 3: Philadelphia -6 vs. Chicago

With the Eagles coming off a good win last week at Jersey/B while the Bears coming from a heartbreaking lost, I see the Eagles coming out on top. The Bears just aren’t clicking this year and we’ve already seen what can happen if McNabb gets into a groove.

Chicago 21 Philadelphia 31

Game 4: Jacksonville +3.5 vs. Indianapolis

With this AFC North Divisional battle, look for a tough fought game that could come down to either the foot of Carney or Vinatieri for a game winning field goal. Jacksonville at home on the big state of MNF should come up primed for the upset.

Indianapolis 17 Jacksonville 20

The Epic Path to The Meineke Bowl

by Dave Johnson

Week of October 20, 2007

Michigan -2.5 @ Illinois

If this team was coached by anyone other than Zook, I'd like the Illini here. Led by The Juice, a top 10 running back, and J. (Crabtree) Lehman, this team looks like they could be on their way. A night game to take out Michigan seems within their sights. However, Zook is still on the list* and you know what that means: I'm taking the maize and blue. Mendenhaal gets his, but Juice will run into problems. Mike Hart has a slow first half but takes over the game in the fourth quarter, Lloyd Carr puts Zook in his place, and moves down the path of another "title game" loss to Ohio State in mid November.

Michigan 30, Illinois 21

Michigan State +17 @ Ohio State

I'm riding the hot hand here, as the Spartans have come through for me twice on the blog thus far. I like the way this team plays - disciplined, under control - essentially the opposite of the John L. regime. I don't think they have a chance to knock out the class of the Big 10 but they'll play the right way and give Ohio State a mild challenge. In case you haven't seen him, Javon Ringer is sick. They can also play a little defense. In the end, Buckeyes are just too solid all around to lose this one. This one stays around ten - but Spartans keep it close most of the game.

Ohio State 27, Michigan State 17

Cincinnati -9.5 @ Pittsburgh

Speaking of the list, it's always a nice bonus to have Wanny and a favorable spread on your side. While it's not Denny Green and the Minnesota Vikings laying a beat down, the Bearcats know a thing or two about offense. Pitt won't be able to move the ball against the Bearcats D, and the Panthers will have a tough time containing Cincy's big play offense. Expect 1-2 40+ yard touchdown strikes from the 'Cats, and the Pittsburgh faithful call for Walt Harris.

Cincinnatti 41, Pittsburgh 21

Auburn +11 @ LSU

After starting the season 1-2, Auburn has won 4 straight and is right back in the middle of the SEC race. The way they're doing it is vintage Auburn - pound the run, play tough D. The much ridiculed Brandon Cox isn't even getting in the way anymore. LSU is coming off a deflating loss to Kentucky, knocking then out of the number 1 spot. A loss like that often takes a lot of of a team, and I don't expect the Tigers to bring their A game. A lot of teams might be intimidated by Tiger Stadium at night, but Auburn isn't one of them. These two typically play pretty even matched games, don't expect any different this time around. I'd call for the upset if Auburn had a kicker - but LSU's superior special teams leads them to victory

LSU 23, Auburn 21

Picks From Peter King’s Ass

Week 6

By: Tom Sunset and Frankie Meadowview

It's rebound week for the Sunset and Meadowview. Last week, we broke even and I think that has bothered me more than if I would have gone 0-3. I hate tying. Tying is like taking a fat chick home from the bar. Yeah, you hooked up, but now you have to spend the rest of the week denying it to your buddies and hoping no one saw you sneak out of the bar hand-in-hand with a linebacker, so you might as well have not hooked up at all. Fear not fellas, for we are about to turn it around this week. There will be no coercing the big girl home with promises of ordering a pizza. No my friends, we are going after the big prize this week. We are going after the hot girl, with the hot friends and we are taking her home.

Sunset's Sure-Shot Picks: Week 6

On to this week picks…..

Game 1: St. Louis (+10.5) at Baltimore

In the stomach punch game of the week, I am going with the Rams. As hard as it is to pick the Rams in anything this year (with the exception of "most likely to get the #1 overall pick in the 08 draft"), they should be able to keep this one close. The Rams offense finally got it going last week, putting up 31 points against a solid Arizona defense. The Rams o-line is finally relatively healthy and Brian Leonard looked strong in his first NFL start last week gaining more than 100 yards. They will have their hands full this week though against a still tough Baltimore D. Despite this, 10.5 points is too many for Steve McNair to cover. If the Rams can keep the turnovers down, this should be an easy cover.

Final Score: Baltimore 17 St. Louis 14

Game 2: Arizona -4.5 vs. Carolina

Apparently we are living in the bazarro world because this is the second consecutive week I am going with Arizona. The Cardinals' offense is very solid and should be able to put up points against the less than scary Carolina D. Carolina is big up front, but not very strong in the secondary, which should allow Boldin (if he plays this week), Fitzgerald and Johnson to be able to get open. Warner has looked very impressive so far this year and you can expect that to continue. The Cardinals' o-line is controlling the rush and allowing Warner to pick defenses apart. In addition, Carolina will be starting Vinny Testaverde this weekend. That is not a misprint. Vinny D was signed on Tuesday of this week after David Carr was injured during last week's game. Given that he is 132 years old and has all of 5 days to learn the offense and get to know his receivers, we are going to have to say there is not going to be an offensive explosion for Carolina this week. Actually, I take that back, there is a good chance Vinny's body will explode at first contact Sunday.

Final Score: Arizona 28 Carolina 3

Game 3: New England -5.5 at Dallas (The Afternoon Delight Special)

This one matches up two of the remaining three undefeated teams in the NFL. It is a match-up of the top two ranked offenses (Dallas is 1, NE is 2) and two of the top ten defenses (NE is 2, Dallas is 8). One would think this should be a close game. However, as my man Corso says, "Not so fast my friend". Romo showed last week that he can get confused and make mistakes when the defense disguises its coverage and you can expect Belicheck to throw everything including the bathroom sink (he will withhold the kitchen sink in case they meet up again at the SB) at Romo this week. Look for the Pats D to move around a lot and mix up their coverages to bait Romo into picks. Brady is currently the top rated passer in the league and you can expect him, Moss and Welker to light up an extremely overmatched DB unit in Dallas. Dallas' safeties are hard hitters that can help on the run, but you should not expect them to be able to contain the passing arsenal of NE. Another factor in this game is going to be special teams. Dallas' coverage units have been awful so far giving up two returning TDs in as many weeks. Expect Welker to bust a long run for either a score or very good field position.

Final Score: NE 35 Dallas 21

Game 4: NY Giants -3.5 at Atlanta

Baby Manning is coming into his own this year and looking like he may make the leap to franchise QB. Manning has continued to improve each week and has not been making the critical mistakes that haunted him in the past. Another bright spot is a healthy Brandon Jacobs in the backfield. The G-Men have a legitimate 1-2 punch in the backfield with the power-running Jacobs and the speedster Derrick Ward. Atlanta does not put a lot of pressure on opposing QBs and their corners have a tendency to bite on fakes. Expect a couple of big play-action plays down the field. The Giants' once porous defense has stepped up the last few weeks and has done a very good job of pressuring the QB. Expect this trend to continue this week. Expect "I'm 28 years old but still go by Joey" Harrington to be on his back repeatedly as Osi and Strahan will be in his face all day.

Final Score: NY 28 Atlanta 13

Frankie Meadowview’s Week 6 Picks

Game 1: Tennessee +3 @ Tampa Bay

Vince Young will be looking to bounce back from his dismal performance last week against Atlanta on the road against a good Tampa Bay team. I have to give the edge to the Titans for the fact that Tampa has still not beaten a real NFL team they beat the hapless Saints and the David Carr led Carolina Panthers.

Tennessee 24 Tampa Bay 20

Game 2: Cleveland -4.5 vs. Miami

Cleveland can’t get rid of Joey Porter, he finally leaves the Steelers and winds up on the a team slated to play the Browns this year, well the war of words between Porter and “I’m a Solider” Winslow will continue this weekend in the Cleve. Hopefully there will be a swarm of insects that lodge themselves in Cleo Lemon’s helmet.

Miami 10 Cleveland 21

Game 3: Philadelphia -3 @ Jersey/B

Philly is coming off a bye week and should be rested and refreshed for their push to mediocrity. I foresee Westbrook and Buchhalter running wild on the Jersey/B defense who couldn’t stop the Giants run last week. Look for the easy cover in at the Meadowlands.

Philadelphia 31 Jersey/B 13

The Epic Path to The Meineke Bowl

Week of October 13, 2007

Make your plans for the Sun Bowl - this week it's an all Big Ten special!

Michigan St -4.5 vs Indiana

After starting the season 4-0, Michigan State has come back to earth and lost 2 straight games, the second being to pitiful Northwestern. Historically, there is no better way to cure all ills than to welcome Indiana to your home turf. The Hoosiers have looked impressive - averaging 37.5 pts per game, sitting at 5-1 - so they are not their typical slouch. But IU's only respectable win, at Iowa, doesn't look as impressive as it once did. Lets not also forget IU's "hot" start last year, see where that got them. Indiana won't have an answer for Michigan State's running games, especially with the surgence of Javon Ringer (330 yards the last 2 weeks on 24 carries). Spartan Stadium will be rocking for this 7:00pm start, and the Green and White will be hungry to get back in the win column.

Michigan State 31, IU 20

Wisconsin +7 @ Penn State

I'm a little weary of this match up because Penn State shuts down the run, and you and I know that's the Badgers bread and butter. Tyler Donovan has been par at best during the Big 10 season and it's hard to imagine he'll be able to make much happen against a solid Penn State secondary. Wisconsin's D has also been disappointing this year. On paper, I'd take Penn State. But Wisconsin is coming off a loss, and the Badgers don't usually lay two eggs in a row. They're not the type of program that is intimidated on the road either. Plus, Wisconsin has won 5 of the last 7 of these meetings, including 2 of 3 in Happy Valley. Having been a Big 10 football fan for 15 years, I've seen match ups and intangibles that I can't really describe. Give me Wisconsin and the points.

Penn State 17, Wisconsin 14

Iowa +4 vs. Illinois

Sure, Iowa has lost 4 straight and Illinois has been shredding anything in its path. So naturally, I'm going with the Hawkeye’s. After a home loss to IU (yikes) and a spanking on the road to Penn State, these guys have hit rock bottom. They're too good of a program and Kirk Frerentz a coach to stay down for too long. They're playing for pride and would love nothing more than to knock Illinois off their high horse. As far as the Illini, Rashard Mendenhall is the real deal and still flying under the radar. But he'll have a tough time getting his against a Hawks defense allowing only 16.7 point per game. The Illini's weakness is their passing D and Jake Christensen has been more than capable against below average secondaries. All that being said, the Big 10 is a clusterfuck this year...don't you just feel like it's time for Illinois and Zook to come back to earth?

Illinois 21, Iowa 24

Michigan -5.5 vs. Prdue

Maybe it's the fact that Purdue hasn't won a game of any magnitude since Notre Dame 2004. Maybe it's that Lloyd Carr is the one coach who legitimately owns Joe Tiller. It might be that Purdue hasn't won in the Big House since 1966. Or that the Curtis Painter/Zunbrecher/Legg combo get shut down completely by anyone in the top 50. I could probably go on for about an hour. I'll tell you that on paper, Purdue could cover this spread and maybe even win the game. Then again, paper wasn't in the student section last week for yet another Boilermaker embarrassment. Paper hasn't witnessed Purdue start hot every year, go into a mid-season swoon, finish the season by beating a few crappy teams, and then get trounced in a token bowl game. I know as much as anyone about Purdue football, and if we cover this spread, I will be shocked.

Michigan 28, Purdue 10

Picks From Peter King’s Ass

By: Tom Sunset and Frankie Meadowview

Sunset's Sure-Shot Picks: Week 5

Sunset is looking to the traveling teams to bring home some victories this week.

Game 1: Arizona Cardinals (-3) at St. Louis

It has been a tough start in St. Louis this season and don't expect that to change this week. The once potent Ram offense has fallen far from the glory days of "the Greatest Show on Turf". Surprisingly, their new horizontal passing attack consisting of direct passes and quick hitches to WRs doesn't seem to gain as many yards as throwing down the field. Injuries have played a large role in the Rams' struggles and they aren't any healthier this week. The o-line is missing 6 of their top 7. Also out for this game are Mark Bulger, Steven Jackson, and Isaac Bruce. Add that to a surprising struggle by once accurate kicker Jeff Wilkins and this all adds up to no points for the Rams. Look for a much-improved Arizona defense to take charge of this battle.

Arizona comes into this game off a big victory over the previously unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers. In that game, the Cardinals showed they can move the ball effectively on offense and they are able to shut down the run on defense. This game is going to start out close, but after a few 3 & outs from "starting" QB Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner (with the combined strength of God and his wife's 1992 side spike) will come in and light up his former team. Top receiver, Anquan Boldin, is likely to out this game, but the combination of Larry Fitzgerald, Edgerrin James, and Bryant Johnson should give the Cardinals' O plenty of fire power to drop the Rams to 0-5.

Final Score: Arizona 24 Rams 6

Game 2: Jacksonville (-3) at Kansas City

Jacksonville is coming off a bye-week and are looking to continue their winning ways against KC this weekend. The Jags started the season with a tough loss to Tennessee but then rebounded to wins over Atlanta and Denver. The key to this matchup is going to be the Jaguars' run game. If they can establish the run early, the play-action pass will be wide open. QB David Gerrard comes into this game as the #7 rated passer in the league with 10 TDs and 0 INTs. Gerrard has done a good job of protecting the ball and you can look for that trend to continue this weekend.

KC is going to have to run the ball extremely effectively in order to stay in this game. Unfortunately for them, this has been a struggle this year. Last week against San Diego, Larry Johnson was finally able to find some running room, but don’t expect that to happen this weekend against a very stout front 7 from Jacksonville. KC has no passing threat, so expect the Jags to load up 8 in the box and force Damon Huard to beat them through the air. Arrowhead does give KC an advantage because it is tough atmosphere to play in, but that is not going to be enough this weekend when they face superior talent.

Final Score: Jacksonville 21 KC 13

Game 3: Baltimore (-3.5) at San Francisco

Looking for some redemption, Baltimore cruises into the Bay area this weekend to earn back some respect. The once impenetrable defense has shown signs of aging lately allowing Cleveland, Arizona and Cincy to light them up in the air. That shouldn't be a problem this week. SF starting QB Alex Smith will be out this week, which means pedestrian veteran Trent Dilfer will be manning the ship. Dilfer controlled the reigns for the majority of the game last week and showed once again why he has played for more teams than 1985-1995 Madonna (before she found faith and a British accent and started lecturing others on how to live life). Dilfer, combined with SF's weak receiving core, should make this an ideal match-up for the Ravens.

The Ravens O has been shaky at times this year, but Kyle Boller has done a solid job in his dual role this year of relieving a battered Steve McNair, while simultaneously trying to save his NFL career. Look for a healthy supply of Willis McGahee as he tries to run the ball down SF's throat all day. SF has been struggling a bit to stop the run this year and if that trend continues, it is going to be a long day for the wine-sippers in the crowd.

Final Score:

Baltimore 21 SF 9

Frankie Meadowview Week 5 NFL Picks:

I’m not as talkative as ol’ Sunset, but no one cares about words, everyone’s looking to make money, so here we go…

Meadowview is going to go taking three home teams and the Monday night road team.

Game 1: Pittsburgh (-6) vs Seattle

With a Super Bowl XL rematch at hands this weekend, I’m taking Pittsburgh since word has come down they have already paid the refs off for this game as well. Look for Pittsburgh to bounce back after the disappointing road loss to their former coordinators.

Seattle 14 Pittsburgh 24

Game 2: Tennessee (-8) vs Atlanta

With the Titans coming off a bye week, watch out for Vince Young and his well-rested legs to claw and fight his way through the Falcons defense in route to the win and if the Titans are down early, no need to worry, DeAngleo Hall will commit 67 yards of penalties and move them down the field.

Atlanta 7 Tennessee 28

Game 3: Giants (-3) vs Jets

With the battle for Jersey underway at 1 pm on Sunday, watch the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets to crash and burn right into the turf as the Giants offense flies past the Jets defense. The Giants will extend their win steak to 4 against the Jets dating back to 1993.

Jets 13 Giants 31

MONDAY NIGHT PARLAY

Game 4: Dallas (-10.5) at Buffalo; over 48

With Trent Edwards getting his 2nd career start against the Cowboys, look for him to struggle while the Cowboys offense continues their high octane offense of Romo, Barber, and Owens, it’ll going to be like Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII all over again. Give the points and take the over.

Dallas 41 Buffalo 14

The Epic Path to The Meineke Bowl

Week of October 6, 2007

Utah
+14.5 @ Louisville, Friday

We've seen all Louisville’s troubles. While I think they've reached the depths and are on the way back, they take on a Utah team trying to make a statement. Having Brian Johnson back and a 2 TD win over Utah State was a nice start. Now Johnson goes up against the 104th ranked passing defense and a national stage to show what he's worth. In spite of the woes, Papa John's offense is still potent and can beat you a number of ways. Teams have been able to run at will against the Utes, expect a steady dose of Anthony Allen. Brian Brohm knows how to open it up too. Expect a classic Friday night shoot-up - parlay the points and the over.

Louisville 48, Utah 44

Kansas + 3 @ Kansas State

There's nothing that says let down quite like an 11 am game on Saturday follow a victory over Texas. This is the second year in a row K-State has taken out the Horns, and I predict another follow up trouncing by the Jayhawks. Kansas has rolled everything in its tracks this year. They've got a lot to prove, and they’re fully capable. Jayhawks straight up.

Kansas 45, Kansas State 28

Cincinnati + 3.5 @ Rutgers

Rutgers was exposed last weekend in their loss at home to Maryland. The Terps ran all over their front seven and kept the ball out of the offense's hands. The Bearcats are on fire right now, with the offense and defense both clicking on all cylinders. These team may be the squad to challenge South Florida in the Big East. Ride the hot hand, take the Cats and the points.

Cincinatti 34, Rutgers 27

Miami -6.5 @ North Carolina

Butch Davis faces his old squad in a return to the Orange Bowl. While I think Davis will have success at UNC, he is still a year away. The offense has been absolutely inept while the D is middle of the pack at best. The Canes play tough D and run the ball well. The quarterback has been the main question mark but Kyle Wright has solidified himself in the role after putting up 40-49 for 500 yards with 4 TDs 1 pick last 2 weeks. Play The U.
